Spiritual warning: To the senseless, education is fetters on the feet, like manacles on the right hand. Ben Sira 21:19
The entire Bible teaches the importance of education, and the sapiential literature in particular. But from an ethical point of view, education is not the acquisition of scientific or technological knowledge, but the acquisition of the most excellent science. To educate, then, is to instruct in wisdom, and wisdom is the science of the correct means for living.
This is why, when someone is presented with wisdom and asks what its purpose is, that person is uneducated, regardless of their university degree. Without wisdom, any scientific or technological training will be very weak, and this can be seen in the failure of many Asian and African nations that, despite adopting cutting-edge technologies, still have a large portion of their population living in poverty. When wisdom fails in a society, everything fails.
This is why the leadership as such belongs to the wise, that is, to people trained by God to teach the highest science, like King Solomon, who received the gift of wisdom in the sacred place of Gibeon. And the Book of Ben Sira teaches about the wise men: "Like a gold ornament is education to the wise, like a bracelet on the right arm" Ben Sira 21:21. When society is led by those who love science, that is, the wise, society prospers, because common sense prevails in decision-making.
But the Bible also gives a spiritual warning: the opposite also exists: "To the senseless, education is fetters on the feet, like manacles on the right hand" Ben Sira 21:19. For the fool, as Ben Sira taught, there is no science for living as such, because the only thing that matters is unbridled selfishness and one's own fleeting passions. An example of this in the Bible was Cain, who killed Abel out of passion, as recounted in Genesis. Cain despised God's wisdom and was condemned.
Promoting the science of God and preventing the most destructive individuals in society from prevailing is the task of every healthy society. This is what true spirituality is all about. Wisdom is therefore the greatest treasure that a man and a society can possess, because as the Bible teaches, with wisdom comes all riches: "You may expend a great deal of silver to acquire instruction, but, as a result, you will gain much gold" Ben Sira 51:28.
