Knicks fans destroy their own city after winning championship

in #sports6 days ago

If you read what I put up here you probably are no stranger to the fact that my favorite two teams in any US sport is some particular team and "anyone who is playing against Philadelphia."

The reason for this is not some sort of rivalry the likes of what exists in cross-town rivalries like the Cubs and White Sox, or even greater proximity like Boston and New York, but because of the fact that Philly fans have earned a reputation of being hooligans of the highest order. They beat up other fans for simply being fans of another team, they destroy property in other cities when they visit, they injure maim and probably have killed people in places that they visit. Fans of other teams normally choose to not travel to Philly games or if they do, there is a ton of security involved and visiting fans are forced to sit in special areas and are strongly encouraged to stay in select hotels and to not wear any clothing for their team outside of the stadium. When Philly won the Super Bowl last year the fans in Philly basically rioted and destroyed their own city. I thought they were the only ones but I had my suspicions about New York Knicks fans and predicted quite a while ago that if they won the NBA championship, they were going to wreck havoc on their own city.

Unfortunately, I was correct.

There are loads of videos out there of people in the streets just trashing random stuff and a lot of business owners had already boarded up the windows because they figured this would happen. When fans started to climb on top of random vehicles and then start to break out the windows for some reason, things were already out of hand.

The police don't help very much there as there are a lot of videos of them just standing idly by and not arresting any of the people that are just destroying random stuff. Perhaps this is the reason why these sorts of things don't happen in other cities? Just maybe? I don't care to get into the political side of things but honestly, if you live there and you KNOW that they police aren't going to do anything, what's to stop you from doing something like this?

I'm sure it started out innocently enough but I think it takes a special type of unruly attitude to think it is ok to just climb on top of random cars or somehow even worse, school busses. This wasn't enough for some people so they started to break the windows and remove the front hood from it as well. Then, because not enough nonsense had taken place, some people thought it was a good idea to start the vehicle, which contains a lot of gasoline, on fire.

Someone also got shot, because of course they did.

Eventually damage to police vehicles and assaults on officers was next in line because of course it is. The police eventually got some balls and started arresting people and a total of 63 arrests were made. That number seems staggeringly low to me considering the widespread violence and destruction. Plus, if memory serves me right these arrests are unlikely to result in any real punishment and therefore the people are not going to think twice about doing it in the future.

You won! Why are you wrecking stuff?

I just think the mentality of some people from some cities differs greatly from the mentality of other people. In all the various sports championships of the past I can't recall a time when people took to the streets to cause general mayhem but the two I can think of were Philly and NYC. Yet when Kansas City, Dallas, Tampa Bay, Denver, and whoever else wins this doesn't happen. So what can we draw from this?

I think we can go ahead and add NYC to the very short list of braindead fans, at least that is the way that it is going to be for me. You win and wreck your own city? You are morons and I will be rooting against you in the future and so will a lot of other people. It takes a special breed of stupid to take something wonderful and turn it into something ugly but New York managed exactly that! To be fair the Knicks players themselves condemned the rioting and violence, but this isn't enough. I fear that the only way we can keep these people in line is to not allow them to gather and celebrate in the first place, and that is just sad.
