Allow me to take part in this challenge. I hope that what I write will be meaningful and leave a lasting impression on whoever reads it.

1. Social Event

I recently took part in a community initiative. This was the most recent community initiative I have taken part in to date. The initiative was linked to a tradition that has been passed down through the generations within the local community. This tradition is also frequently practised by various communities and educational institutions, including the school where I teach.

We often refer to it as the Social Service Campaign to Welcome Ramadan, or, in the local language, Seumegleh (cleaning). This activity is always and frequently carried out on a voluntary basis in the run-up to major festivals, one of which is the holy month of Ramadan.

At that time, many local communities will come together to clean places of worship. And it is not just the local community, but also various organisations and teachers’ groups that will do the same.

This tradition has been preserved to this day. The chosen venue is also close to where the community or organisation is based, so that the event can be held effectively and efficiently.

2. Cultural Initiatives

Based on our experience and the social impact observed during the Bakti Sosial Menyambut Ramadhan (Social Service to Welcome Ramadan) or Seumegleh activities, the most significant outcomes achieved were:
1. The creation of a clean and comfortable environment for places of worship.
2. The fostering of social interaction amongst all sections of the community.
3. The promotion of values of unity amongst people of different faiths.

All these social impacts are indeed in line with the programmes of the regional and city governments, consequently, in the run-up to major festivals, the government has urged the public to continue working together to support this community-led social movement known as Seumegleh.

This appeal will continue, and even without being urged, the public voluntarily carries out these activities on important occasions.

3. Challenges

As the times continue to evolve, and without us realising it, all forms of tradition may shift and disappear. Consequently, the greatest challenge is how to encourage the younger generation to take part in these activities.

Foreign culture has, to a greater or lesser extent, made young people increasingly indifferent to matters they perceive as out of step with the times. Yet the positive impact that endures into the future embodies significant social values that are well worth preserving, particularly for the younger generation.

4. Which social movements or grassroots movements are becoming increasingly prominent.

The spirit of mutual cooperation, which is a hallmark of the community, is indirectly being preserved and continues to spread across various aspects of life. This forms a strong foundation for community life.

Social values do not merely flourish during major festivals, but extend to other community activities as well. Good habits always lead to great things, so social movements such as these are able to nurture social values within the community.

5. Artworks & Art Projects

This initiative has also ultimately sparked curiosity amongst everyone. How can this tradition serve as a draw for outsiders, allowing them to witness how harmony, solidarity and unity can be realised?

This small-scale project, which has been carried out consistently, has become a model for the city’s residents. At present, the local community does not place much importance on the values of social interaction and tends to remain isolated within community life.

6. Environmental Impact

As the title of this initiative suggests, all activities will aim to create a clean and comfortable environment. This is particularly true of places of worship, which require a peaceful and clean atmosphere so that people may communicate with the Creator in pleasant and comfortable conditions.

This also serves as an example that cleanliness and comfort are a shared responsibility that must be maintained. Not only on specific festive days, but also throughout the day and at all times.

Ultimately, whether or not this post proves successful, I have shared a local tradition that you may be hearing about for the first time. It is a major initiative that calls on people from all walks of life to create a clean and comfortable environment, starting with places of worship.

It’s a pleasure to be able to share this with you all, and I hope there are stories and goals that align with what I’ve written here. So that the hope of creating a better life continues to exist and grow amongst communities globally.
