Over the last few weeks a new module of the Welako platform has grown that I want to introduce in detail today: WelSnap. It is what Snapchat tried to be before it turned into a pure advertising space — but thought through differently, with Steem integration, a map view, and a deliberate refusal of spam mechanics.

What is WelSnap?

WelSnap is the photo and video module of Welako. You take a live capture directly from the app — no gallery upload, no edited pictures, no filters, no image manipulation. What you capture goes to Welako as it is, gets sorted onto your personal photo map, and is published to the Steem blockchain at the same time.

The picture above shows the public WelSnap profile of a photographer. At the top a header with the number of posts, votes, and pending rewards. Below it a map with the GPS markers of the published captures. Below that a month calendar in which every day with captures shows its mini-previews directly. At the bottom the photo gallery of all posts.

Why yet another photo service?

There are plenty of apps for uploading pictures at random. WelSnap deliberately does something different:

• A daily limit of three posts per person — as a quality protection, not as a paywall. If you can post three times a day, you think about which moment is worth it

• No premium, no paid feature, no advertising — WelSnap stays free. The costs for storage (Cloudflare R2 for images and videos) and servers I cover myself, because I believe in the idea

• Rewards in STEEM — anyone who shares a particularly beautiful moment can earn a few cents or more through community votes

• Beneficiary share — by default 10 % of the reward goes to Welako development, adjustable in preferences

• Live captures instead of gallery upload — no old pictures, no edited photos. What you see right now is what gets shared

Privacy as a core function

WelSnap is not naive about your data. There are four tiers for location:

• No location — the capture appears without GPS reference

• 5 km radius — a rough region, no one will find your house

• 1 km radius — a recognizable district

• Exact location — pinpoint, for photos that document a specific spot

You also decide whether your technical data (camera model, lens, aperture, ISO, shutter speed, flash) is published by default. And whether your personal photo map is publicly visible to other Welako users. All preferences can still be changed per individual photo before publishing — the preference is only the default choice.

Map and month calendar

A special feature that I have not seen in any other photo app in this form so far: WelSnap couples the photo map with a month calendar.

The picture above shows the detail view of an individual post. At the top the photo in full size. Below it the photo info with capture timestamp, camera model, and resolution. Below that a small map with the 1 km radius location, matching the chosen privacy tier.

On the profile page (image 1 at the top) this is a month calendar: columns for the weeks, rows for the weekdays, in each day cell up to three mini-preview images. Clicking a preview image centers the map on the location of that capture and makes the pin pulse. Clicking a pin on the map scrolls the calendar to the matching entry. This creates an entirely new way into your own photo collection — not just "when", not just "where", but both linked together.

The current day is color-highlighted. Months without captures show a clean notice. Arrow buttons or a month dropdown let you navigate through time.

How the post lands on Steem

Every WelSnap post creates a parallel post on the Steem blockchain. On Welako itself you have the full experience — map, lightbox, EXIF panel, vote dialog, share options, report button. On Steem frontends like Steemit, SteemPro, busy, or Steempeak you see the post with text, a preview image, and a reference link back to welako.app.

Important technical note about the video format: WelSnap videos are stored on Cloudflare R2 as MP4 with H.265 codec. Steem frontends cannot play this format directly in the browser — they are primarily optimized for images. That is why the Steem post embeds a still preview frame, plus a clearly labeled link "Play video (0:32)" back to welako.app, where the actual player runs. This keeps the post on Steem informative without harming the reward mechanism — voting and commenting work normally through the respective Steem frontend.

In plain words: anyone who wants to vote on Steem votes on Steem. Anyone who wants to watch the video clicks the link and watches it at welako.app in the proper player. Both worlds benefit.

Publishing — the workflow

When capturing, quite a lot happens technically:

1. The app captures the photo or video directly from the camera — for video a maximum of 60 seconds and 150 MB

2. EXIF data is read, ImageSharp normalizes orientation (no landscape image is accidentally upside down anymore)

3. Location data is rounded or removed according to the chosen privacy tier — at "1 km radius" the GPS point is dropped onto a 1 km grid, the exact result is no longer reconstructible

4. The image is uploaded in parallel to two storages: Cloudflare R2 as primary, steemitimages.com as a Steem-native mirror, so Steem frontends can display safely

5. The Steem post is assembled: photo or video preview, capture info if opted in, location hint with a static map (rendered from 3×3 OpenStreetMap tiles), reference link back to Welako, WelSnap tags, WelSnap-specific beneficiary configuration

6. The post is broadcast to Steem and simultaneously mirrored in the local Welako database for fast display

You see none of this — you tap "capture", optionally a short description, then "publish". The rest happens in the background in under two seconds.

Reporting and deleting

Welako is an EU-compliant platform. Specifically for WelSnap that means:

• Report post via a three-dot menu, six predefined reasons from "offensive content" to "harassment", optional free-text field. This is the DSA obligation

• An AI pre-check (Claude Haiku) automatically evaluates incoming reports — obvious false reports get auto-dismissed, critical cases go to admin review

• GDPR-compliant deletion mechanism: on Welako the post including the image is removed from R2. The Steem post itself naturally stays on the blockchain — the blockchain is decentralized and that entry is immutable. However, anyone can edit their own Steem post afterwards via any Steem frontend, even after months or years: adjust the description, remove the image link from the text. The old version remains traceable in the block history — someone who actively searches for the old link can find it there. How steemitimages.com handles mirrored images in deletion cases is not fully clear to me at the moment

Technical stack — for the developers reading

For witnesses and developers in the Steem ecosystem, a brief overview:

• Frontend: Vue 3 + Vuetify 3, 11 languages via vue-i18n (de, en, ko, ja, zh, es, fr, it, pt, ru, tr), Leaflet for maps with OpenStreetMap, leaflet.markercluster for cluster pin logic

• Backend: .NET 8 / C#, dotsteem library for Steem broadcasting, ImageSharp for image manipulation, ffprobe for video metadata

• Storage: Cloudflare R2 as primary image and video storage, MariaDB for the Welako database

• Steem integration: wallet operations via posting keys derived from the master password using HMAC — no posting key is stored in plain text. Encryption with AES-256-GCM, key material distributed via a 3-shard system across server, client, and an HSM-like procedure

• Mobile-first: the entire frontend is optimized for devices from 390 px wide upward. Touch targets at least 48×48 px, WCAG AA contrast in light and dark mode

• PWA: auto-update on next tab switch via a Service Worker, with an update banner for confirmation

• Test account system: separate test users with bypass flags, Discover filtering; automatically removed after the beta

The most important point: WelSnap is not a cargo-cult project. Every function was either motivated by user feedback or fulfills a concrete legal requirement (GDPR, DSA, PAngV).

Current status, launch, and what comes next

WelSnap is currently in the beta tester phase. The planned launch is June 1, 2026 as part of the bigger Welako release with WelBnB (vacation rental brokerage), WelMart (handmade items), WelBook (e-books), and other modules.

The platform will be expanded step by step depending on user interest. I have many more ideas in the drawer — reverse geocoding for real place names on the calendar, a pre-publish preview, video filters and frame extraction, notifications, deeper Steem-witness integration, and more. Which of these moves up the priority list depends directly on which features users actually use and ask for.

I am also expecting a noticeable number of new users from my Facebook environment in the coming weeks — I run several Facebook communities with a few hundred thousand members combined, and my own wall reaches a substantial audience. Some of them will arrive without prior Steem experience, which is exactly the audience WelSnap is designed for: simple language, large touch targets, no jargon.

Feedback is explicitly wanted — bugs, design impressions, feature wishes, "this is confusing" notes. Over the past weeks I have submitted multiple Claude Code assignments per day based on test findings — that is the engine that has made the platform what it is today, and it will keep running.

Conclusion

WelSnap is not a competitor to Instagram or Snapchat — it is a different answer to the question "how do I share a moment". With reward mechanics through Steem, with a map view and calendar linking, with clear privacy tiers, with a deliberately small daily quota. For 50-to-80-year-olds who want to document a walk. For 20-year-olds who want to see their trip in a calendar. For photographers who want to show their captures linked to place and time on a map. For Steem users looking for an app with real added value.

🇩🇪 WelSnap — Live-Fotos und Videos auf Steem, mit Privatsphäre-Stufen und Monats-Kalender

In den letzten Wochen ist ein neues Modul der Welako-Plattform gewachsen, über das ich heute ausführlich schreiben möchte: WelSnap. Es ist das, was Snapchat gerne sein wollte, bevor es zu einem reinen Werbeplatz wurde — aber konzeptionell anders gedacht, mit Steem-Anbindung, Karten-Ansicht und einem bewussten Verzicht auf Spam-Mechanik.

Was ist WelSnap?

WelSnap ist das Foto- und Video-Modul von Welako. Du machst eine Live-Aufnahme direkt aus der App heraus — kein Hochladen aus der Galerie, keine bearbeiteten Bilder, keine Filter, keine Bildbearbeitung. Was du aufnimmst, geht so wie es ist auf Welako, wird in deine persönliche Foto-Karte einsortiert und gleichzeitig auf der Steem-Blockchain veröffentlicht.

Das obere Bild zeigt das öffentliche WelSnap-Profil eines Fotografen. Oben ein Header mit Anzahl der Beiträge, Stimmen und ausstehender Belohnung. Darunter eine Karte mit den GPS-Markern der veröffentlichten Aufnahmen. Darunter ein Monats-Kalender, in dem jeder Tag mit Aufnahmen die Mini-Vorschau direkt anzeigt. Unten die Foto-Galerie aller Beiträge.

Warum noch ein Foto-Dienst?

Es gibt genug Apps, mit denen man wahllos Bilder hochladen kann. WelSnap macht bewusst etwas anders:

• Tageslimit von drei Beiträgen pro Person — als Qualitäts-Schutz, nicht als Bezahl-Hebel. Wer drei Mal am Tag etwas zeigt, überlegt was es wert ist

• Kein Premium, keine Bezahlfunktion, keine Werbung — WelSnap bleibt kostenlos. Die Kosten für Speicherung (Cloudflare R2 für Bilder und Videos) und Server trage ich selbst, weil ich an die Idee glaube

• Belohnungen in STEEM — wer einen besonders schönen Moment teilt, kann durch Community-Stimmen ein paar Cent oder mehr verdienen

• Beneficiary-Anteil — standardmäßig 10 % der Belohnung gehen an die Welako-Entwicklung, anpassbar in den Voreinstellungen

• Live-Aufnahmen statt Galerie-Upload — keine alten Bilder, keine bearbeiteten Fotos. Was du jetzt siehst, ist was geteilt wird

Privatsphäre als Kernfunktion

WelSnap ist nicht naiv mit deinen Daten. Du hast vier Stufen für den Standort:

• Kein Standort — die Aufnahme erscheint ohne GPS-Bezug

• Umkreis 5 km — eine grobe Region, niemand findet damit dein Haus

• Umkreis 1 km — ein erkennbarer Ortsteil

• Genauer Standort — Punkt-genau, für Fotos die einen bestimmten Ort dokumentieren

Außerdem entscheidest du, ob die technischen Daten (Kamera-Modell, Objektiv, Blende, ISO, Belichtungszeit, Blitz) standardmäßig veröffentlicht werden. Und ob deine persönliche Foto-Karte öffentlich für andere Welako-Nutzer sichtbar ist. Alle Voreinstellungen kannst du pro Foto vor dem Veröffentlichen noch anpassen — die Voreinstellung ist nur die Standardwahl.

Karte und Monats-Kalender

Eine Besonderheit, die ich in dieser Form bisher in keiner anderen Foto-App gesehen habe: WelSnap koppelt die Foto-Karte mit einem Monats-Kalender.

Das obere Bild zeigt eine Detail-Ansicht eines einzelnen Beitrags. Oben das Foto in voller Größe. Darunter Photo Info mit Aufnahme-Zeitpunkt, Kamera-Modell und Auflösung. Darunter eine kleine Karte mit dem 1-km-Radius-Standort, also der gewählten Privatsphäre-Stufe entsprechend.

Auf der Profil-Seite (Bild 1 ganz oben) ist das ein Monats-Kalender: Spalten für die Wochen, Zeilen für die Wochentage, in jeder Tageszelle bis zu drei Mini-Vorschau-Bilder. Klick auf ein Vorschau-Bild zentriert die Karte zur Position dieser Aufnahme und lässt den Pin pulsierend leuchten. Klick auf einen Pin auf der Karte scrollt im Kalender zum passenden Eintrag. Das gibt einen ganz neuen Zugang zur eigenen Foto-Sammlung — nicht nur „wann", nicht nur „wo", sondern beides verknüpft.

Der heutige Tag ist farblich hervorgehoben. Monate ohne Aufnahmen zeigen einen sauberen Hinweis. Mit Pfeil-Buttons oder einem Monats-Dropdown navigierst du durch die Zeit.

Wie der Beitrag auf Steem ankommt

Jeder Beitrag auf WelSnap erzeugt parallel einen Post auf der Steem-Blockchain. Auf der Plattform selbst hast du die volle Erfahrung — Karte, Lightbox, EXIF-Panel, Vote-Dialog, Teilen-Optionen, Melden-Knopf. Auf Steem-Frontends wie Steemit, SteemPro, busy oder Steempeak siehst du den Beitrag mit Text, Vorschau-Bild und einem Verweislink zurück zu welako.app.

Wichtiger technischer Hinweis zum Video-Format: WelSnap-Videos werden auf Cloudflare R2 als MP4 mit H.265-Codec gespeichert. Steem-Frontends können dieses Format nicht direkt im Browser abspielen — sie sind primär auf Bilder optimiert. Deshalb wird im Steem-Post ein Standbild-Vorschau-Frame eingebettet, plus ein deutlich gekennzeichneter Link „Video abspielen (0:32)" zurück zu welako.app, wo der eigentliche Player läuft. So bleibt der Beitrag auf Steem informativ, ohne dass die Belohnungs-Mechanik darunter leidet — Voten und Kommentieren funktioniert normal über das jeweilige Steem-Frontend.

Im Klartext: Wer auf Steem voten möchte, votet auf Steem. Wer das Video sehen möchte, klickt auf den Link und sieht es bei welako.app im richtigen Player. Beide Welten profitieren.

Veröffentlichen — der Workflow

Beim Aufnehmen passiert technisch eine ganze Menge:

1. Die App nimmt das Foto oder Video direkt aus der Kamera auf — beim Video sind maximal 60 Sekunden erlaubt, maximal 150 MB

2. EXIF-Daten werden ausgelesen, ImageSharp normalisiert die Orientierung (kein Querbild ist mehr versehentlich falsch herum)

3. Standort-Daten werden gemäß der gewählten Privatsphäre-Stufe gerundet oder gelöscht — bei „Umkreis 1 km" wird der GPS-Punkt auf ein 1-km-Raster fallengelassen, das exakte Ergebnis ist nicht mehr rekonstruierbar

4. Das Bild wird parallel auf zwei Speicher hochgeladen: Cloudflare R2 als primärer Speicher, steemitimages.com als Steem-natives Mirror, damit Steem-Frontends sicher anzeigen können

5. Der Steem-Post wird zusammengebaut: Foto oder Video-Vorschau, Aufnahme-Infos optional, Standort-Hinweis mit Static-Map (gerendert aus 3×3 OpenStreetMap-Tiles), Verweis zurück zu Welako, Welsnap-Tags, Welsnap-spezifische Beneficiary-Konfiguration

6. Der Post wird auf Steem broadcastet, gleichzeitig in der lokalen Welako-Datenbank gespiegelt für schnelle Anzeige

Du siehst davon nichts — du tippst auf „aufnehmen", optional eine kurze Beschreibung, dann „veröffentlichen". Der Rest passiert im Hintergrund in unter zwei Sekunden.

Beitrag melden, Beitrag löschen

Welako ist eine EU-konforme Plattform. Das heißt für WelSnap konkret:

• Beitrag melden über ein Drei-Punkt-Menü, sechs vordefinierte Gründe von „Anstößige Inhalte" bis „Belästigung", optional ein Freitext-Feld. Das ist die DSA-Pflicht

• Eine AI-Vorprüfung (Claude Haiku) bewertet eingehende Meldungen automatisch — offensichtliche Falsch-Meldungen werden auto-dismissed, kritische Fälle gehen zur Admin-Review

• DSGVO-konformer Lösch-Mechanismus: Auf Welako wird der Beitrag inklusive Bild aus R2 entfernt. Der Steem-Post selbst bleibt natürlich auf der Blockchain — die Blockchain ist dezentral und der Eintrag dort unveränderlich. Allerdings kann man den eigenen Steem-Beitrag auch nach Monaten oder Jahren noch über jedes Steem-Frontend bearbeiten: die Beschreibung anpassen, den Bild-Link aus dem Text entfernen. Die alte Version bleibt in der Block-Historie nachvollziehbar — wer den alten Link aktiv sucht, kann ihn dort finden. Wie steemitimages.com mit dort gemirrorten Bildern in Lösch-Fällen umgeht, ist mir aktuell nicht abschließend bekannt

Technischer Stack — für die Entwickler unter den Lesern

Für Witnesses und Entwickler im Steem-Ökosystem ein kurzer Überblick:

Das Wichtigste: WelSnap ist kein Cargo-Cult-Projekt. Jede Funktion wurde entweder durch ein Nutzer-Feedback motiviert oder erfüllt eine konkrete Gesetzes-Anforderung (DSGVO, DSA, PAngV).

Aktueller Stand, Launch und wie es weitergeht

WelSnap ist gerade in der Beta-Tester-Phase. Geplanter Launch ist der 1. Juni 2026 als Teil des größeren Welako-Releases mit WelBnB (Ferienwohnungs-Vermittlung), WelMart (handgemachte Artikel), WelBook (E-Books) und weiteren Modulen.

Die Plattform wird Schritt für Schritt je nach Nutzer-Interesse weiter ausgebaut. Ich habe noch viele Ideen in der Schublade — Reverse-Geocoding für echte Ortsnamen im Kalender, eine Vorab-Vorschau vor dem Veröffentlichen, Video-Filter und Standbild-Extraktion, Benachrichtigungen, tiefere Steem-Witness-Integration, und mehr. Welche dieser Ideen nach oben auf die Liste rutscht, hängt direkt davon ab, welche Funktionen die Nutzer tatsächlich verwenden und wonach sie fragen.

In den kommenden Wochen erwarte ich außerdem eine spürbare Zahl neuer Nutzer aus meinem Facebook-Umfeld — ich betreue dort mehrere Communities mit zusammen einigen hunderttausend Mitgliedern, und auch meine eigene Pinnwand erreicht eine recht große Leserschaft. Viele dieser Menschen kommen ohne vorherige Steem-Erfahrung an, und genau für diese Zielgruppe ist WelSnap gemacht: einfache Sprache, große Touch-Bereiche, kein Fachjargon.

Wer mitmachen möchte: einfach mal ausprobieren. Auf welako.app vorbeischauen, kostenlos registrieren (oder mit bestehendem Steem-Account anmelden) und loslegen. Über Rückmeldungen freue ich mich ausdrücklich — Bugs, Design-Eindrücke, Funktions-Wünsche, „das ist verwirrend"-Hinweise. Über die letzten Wochen wurden tagsüber mehrere Aufträge an Claude Code abgesetzt, basierend auf den Test-Erkenntnissen — das ist der Motor, der die Plattform zu dem gemacht hat, was sie jetzt ist, und er läuft weiter.

Fazit

WelSnap ist keine Konkurrenz zu Instagram oder Snapchat — es ist eine andere Antwort auf die Frage „wie teile ich einen Moment". Mit Belohnungs-Mechanik durch Steem, mit Karten-Ansicht und Kalender-Verknüpfung, mit klaren Privatsphäre-Stufen, mit einer bewusst kleinen Tagesmenge. Für 50–80-Jährige, die einen Spaziergang dokumentieren wollen. Für 20-Jährige, die ihre Reise in einem Kalender sehen möchten. Für Fotografen, die ihre Aufnahmen mit Ort und Zeit auf einer Karte verlinkt zeigen. Für Steem-Nutzer, die nach einer App mit echtem Mehrwert suchen.
