It's a very very very steep climb for that to happen. The standard journal model is deeply entrenched into the fabric of science and stem careers.
Definitely. It would likely just start off as a casual side-income, casual thing. It's a rather long term concept for sure...I'd also expect more adoption from developing countries than, say, the USA
