GIVE ME A SON... OR I'LL MARRY A REAL WOMAN WHO CAN.
“My love, at least wait for me now. You know how tired I feel in this condition…”
Ruth called out to her husband softly, as she struggled down the hospital staircase with her long b@by bump.
But Jude didn’t stop.
Didn’t slow down.
Didn’t even look back.
“Babe, I’m talking to you! Why are you behaving like this?”
She asked again, louder this time, almost drawing the attention of the nurses passing by the hospital premises.
Still, not a word from him. Jude walked straight to his car parked within the premises, unlocked it, and zoomed off...leaving his heavily pregnant wife behind.
She stood there, helpless.
“What kind of man is this? G0d, I’m so tired…”
She muttered under her breath, blinking back tears, trying to reduce the attention from the medical officials who saw what happened.
Too weak to walk straight to the junction, she spotted the security men by the gate and slowly walked toward them.
“Oga security, good morning. Please… can I sit with you a bit?”
She asked politely, easing herself onto a nearby plastic chair.
“Mummy Tiara, your husband just left now. He didn’t wait for you?”
One of the guards asked in a sarcastic tone.
Trying to protect Jude’s image, she smiled faintly.
“He had an emergency meeting at the office, so he had to leave very quickly.”
Moments later, she stood, thanked them, and headed to the junction to catch a keke home.
Minutes later, she got home and opened the door.
As she stepped into the living room… there was Jude.
Legs crossed, sprawled comfortably on the couch, tearing into a plate of bushmeat with a bottle of cold beer beside him.
Ruth stared in disbelief.
“So you abandoned me at the hospital… just to come home and drink beer?”
She asked.
Jude took a slow sip, then looked at her blankly.
“This beer is the only thing helping me digest the bad news the doctor gave us.”
“Bad news? So hearing that we’re expecting another b@by g!rl is now bad news?”
Ruth snapped, her voice trembling.
Jude stood up, dropped the beer bottle on the center table, and flared up.
“Yes, it is! After two g!rls, I was expecting a b0y. I have nothing against g!rls, but three in a row? No, Ruth. That’s not what I prayed for!”
He brushed past her roughly, storming out of the room and slamming the door behind him.
Ruth stood by the window, hands on her belly, watching his car reverse angrily out of the compound.
“He’ll change…
When he meets his third beautiful princess,” she whispered to herself.
She reached for her phone and began dialing her mother’s number to share her pain.
But halfway through, she paused.
No… some things are better kept inside your home, she told herself.
She pressed END CALL and dropped the phone.
A few minutes later, exhaustion took over. She lay on the couch and drifted into a short power nap.
The blaring horn of the school bus woke her.
“Mummy!!! We are back!!!”
Her two daughters, Tiara and Zara, ran in joyfully, their Disney pink backpacks bouncing behind them.
“How was school today, my darlings?”
She asked, forcing a tired smile.
“Fine, mummy!”
They chorused.
She stared at them for a moment...those eyes, their laughter, their energy.
“So beautiful…” she thought.
“How can these blessings feel like a burden to him?”
Later that evening, Jude returned.
The g!rls ran toward him with excitement.
“Daddy!!! Welcome! Where’s the Snickers you promised?”
Tiara asked, wrapping her arms around him.
But Jude didn’t smile.
He didn’t open his arms.
He shoved them aside.
“Go inside!” he barked.
The smile disappeared from their faces instantly.
Ruth hurried over, gathering them into her arms.
“My queens, go inside and watch TV. Mummy will join you soon,”
She said gently.
“Okay, mummy.”
Once they were gone, she turned to Jude, who was already flipping through TV channels like nothing just happened.
“So now you’re transferring your bitterness to the innocent g!rls you once adored?”
Jude hissed.
“If you can change the child in your womb to a b0y, I won’t act like this,” he said without looking at her.
“You gave me a g!rl the first time, I was happy. Second time...another g!rl...I stayed silent, no complaint.
Now a third g!rl? You want me to dance and celebrate what exactly?!”
“What if the sonographer was wrong? What if the machine had a fault?” Ruth replied, trying to stay hopeful.
Jude scoffed.
“At eight months plus? Your final EDD is in two weeks. Don’t deceive yourself.”
He began unbuttoning his shirt, then added carelessly,
“Just so you know, I’m traveling next week. I won’t be back till next month...meaning there will be no naming ceremony for this child.”
Her mouth opened slowly.
“Why?”
He stared directly into her eyes and dropped the bomb unapologetically.
“Because this child isn’t worth celebrating.”
Ruth stood still, stunned.
“You’re the most heartless man I’ve ever known,” she said angrily.
“You speak like this about a b@by you haven’t even met? You should be proud to be called daddy of g!rls.”
Jude gave a bitter laugh and slammed the remote on the table.
“Ruth, let me just say it the way it is…
I would rather be called an imp0teñt man... than be called father of g!rls.”
