The weird road

Just a few minutes north of downtown Moab, Highway 279 moves away from the busy areas and follows the Colorado River into a deep sandstone canyon called "Wall Street" by locals.On one side, towering red cliffs rise straight up, while the river flows smoothly on the other.This drive is one of the most beautiful in the area and you can enjoy it all from inside your car.

As you drive, look out for old petroglyphs carved into the rock walls, hidden dinosaur footprints, and climbers climbing the steep cliffs above the road.

You'll also pass impressive rock formations like Jug Handle Arch, which stands right next to the road.
The paved part of the drive is about 17 miles long and ends at the Potash Boat Ramp.There, the river turns and the canyon opens up one last time before the road becomes dirt.It's a quick and easy trip that offers plenty of geology, history, and stunning views — and you don't even have to get out of the car to take great photos.
