Techno- Report #121 - Cork House, the world's first recycled cork house
<centerCork House, the world's first recycled cork house
One of the most destructive industries is the construction industry, millions of cubic tons of stone, sand, iron and other materials are ruthlessly exploited from deposits in natural areas each year to be used in the manufacture of houses and buildings, the problem is that the demand for housing is growing increasingly world population grows by leaps and bounds so it is a challenge to maintain a construction model consistent with the environment, so today we will discover a house that is made with recycled cork. Meet Cork House.

The initiative was conceived by a group of engineers, the prototype was manufactured outside London in Eton and considered the first building built. With brick and roof of recycled cork. And when I say recycled it is because the exploitation of cork for the wine industry and for the textile and footwear industry has attracted catastrophic consequences for the environment, so the use of recycled cork makes a contrasting difference with conventional construction techniques.

The architects Dido Milne and Oliver Wilton in conjunction with the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL are the pioneers in the construction of houses with walls, ceilings and floors of 100 % corks, it is interesting the properties that this material offers under climatic conditions, when it is cold the internal temperature of the house is climatized but warm and when this warm one feels cool helping to an optimal use of the heater.

The project promises to move in the eco sustainable line reducing the carbon footprint, was awarded as the best ecological building by the Stirling of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The material is obtained from the waste of a Portuguese manufacturer, once purchased is shredded and compressed low temperatures to obtain bricks, so no acrylic rubbers are used which also means pollution, the only thing used is steel to make the skeleton of the house and thus join the cork bricks, for the manufacture of the model house were used one thousand three hundred blocks of cork.

The house has a dimension of 44 square meters with 4 small pieces an open kitchen, living room, bedroom and small attic, a model not very large but cozy, in addition is totally ecological in its form of construction, has the advantage that smells like a forest of cork oaks, in addition to being soft to the touch and has many acoustic properties by the material of plant origin.

It is not the only model of cork but if the one that approaches to the 100% by the abundance that there is in its manufacture, it seems that it is a very optimal model for all the classes of houses that there are in addition it means that its price is cheaper than other buildings. If we consider that most of the buildings have very expensive apartments, so for less price and more ecological advantages, Cork House is a tremendous option when buying a house. It is expected that the alternative of building with cork will be assumed by house manufacturers to reduce the use of traditional materials that as I mentioned at the beginning of the publication has represented a risk for the planet by the uncontrolled exploitation of areas that are wooded and mountainous eliminating part of our biodiversity with irreparable damage.
