In other editions of the technology report I have talked about the plastic industry, in addition to this industry that causes so much pollution are the manufacture of glass and metal for food utensils such as cups or cups. Coffee is one of the most consumed hot drinks worldwide, a company dedicated to sustainable industrial design called Créme located in Brooklyn has spent some years harvesting pumpkins with which it has developed a cup of biodegradable coffee, the cup of coffee whose name is HyO-Cup I am created with a plastic mold before they finish growing are taken out of the mold to be adapted to a cup of coffee.

The moulds are designed to be printed in 3D in order to control the growth of the pumpkin once occupied the internal space of the mold is disassembled and taken to a room where it is sanded and refined details, then left to dry in the sun so that it is resistant and can be used several times. The molds can be varied offering different designs for each type of taste.

This idea is not new, historically the aboriginal peoples of the South American continent have used this type of containers, during century they have perfected the use of different utensils to store and baby different types of liquids. So it is a pleasure that a company tried to commercialize this type of products that does not harm the environment.

One of the main advantages of this innovative way of making coffee cups is the fact that the pumpkins are fast growing crops, besides that once processed they are sealed, totally impermeable and resistant to very hot drinks.

The fact that the pumpkin is a high-yield crop indicates that cups can be made on a large scale, being a profitable market for companies that sell coffee or simply the companies in charge of marketing cups or kitchen utensils. This could reduce the use of plastic as a material for making coffee cups.

The company claims that 100 grams of carbon dioxide are produced for the construction of just one paper cup, and after its use not even 1 % of the total production is recycled. HyO-Cups are 100% biodegradable, do not generate pollution and are more eye-catching than a conventional cup of coffee. No more plastic cups in the oceans or rivers or landfills.

I need to print some of these! I have a huge problem whenever I grow squash with stupid bugs eating them. This would probably keep the bugs from eating the fruits as well as giving me a cool container once it grows big enough. So cool!
