The "Memory Wall" has been one of the most persistent bottlenecks in data center design: scaling memory has meant buying entire new CPUs just to unlock more memory channels.

Two standards are changing that:

  • PCIe Gen 6 doubles bandwidth to 64 GT/s via PAM4 signaling and fixed 256-byte FLITs with built-in forward error correction.
  • CXL 3.1 rides on top of PCIe 6 to enable cache-coherent memory pooling, GPU-to-GPU peer sharing, and fabric-attached memory across a rack.
