The Gospel of Saint Matthew, in its account of the teachings of Jesus, highlights that while the divine teacher preached in Galilee, there were two important moments. The first was the Sermon on the Mount, where he explained God's plan and the ethical and moral principles for entering the Kingdom of God, such as the golden rule.
But then, before starting his journey to Jerusalem, Jesus approached the Sea of Galilee, got into a boat, and while he was near the shore, he began to explain seven beautiful parables to illustrate to his disciples and listeners about his spiritual doctrine, the doctrine of the Kingdom of God. With the seven parables taught by the master, the mystery of Jesus began to take on a different form. And Jesus, in this discourse, among some of his parables, taught the parable of the sower, the parable of the mustard seed, and the parable of the treasure.
And the Gospel of Saint Matthew begins with these words, the spiritual teachings that Jesus gave: "Then he used stories as illustrations to tell them many things. He said, 'Listen! A farmer went to plant seed.'" Matthew 13:3.
Jesus' words at the beginning of his teaching caused nothing but confusion, to such an extent that the Gospel of Matthew recounts about what happened after his words: "The disciples came to him and asked, 'Why do you speak to the people in parables?'" Matthew 13:10. And this reaction was somewhat logical because the disciples were not yet filled with the Holy Spirit and did not understand this topic, but Jesus did. The seed sown in the field had not yet borne fruit, and the hidden treasure had not yet been revealed. The disciples had to go through a great test to prove this truth in their lives after Jesus' ascension to heaven.
And for all this, Jesus was very patient and gentle. And with these words, he answered his disciples the question of why he taught with parables: "Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them" Matthew 13:11. Jesus explained to his disciples that they had been chosen from eternity by the Father in his providence to be the custodians of a special and mysterious knowledge, a knowledge destined to transform a humanity dominated by selfishness, error, and passions. But only at the end, with Jesus' ascension into heaven, were the disciples able to understand the mystery of the parables and of Jesus himself.
