Why Climbing on Top of Trains Is One of the Most Dangerous Things You Can Do

Videos of people climbing onto the roofs of trains often go viral on social media. Some do it for a thrill, others to film dramatic footage or perform dangerous stunts. It might look exciting on camera, but in reality it is one of the most life-threatening things a person can do around a railway.

The danger is not limited to fast trains. In fact, the greatest risk has little to do with speed.

The Biggest Danger Is Electricity

Many people assume the risk comes from falling off the train. While that is certainly a serious danger, electricity is responsible for many of the most severe railway accidents involving people on train roofs.

In countries where trains are powered by overhead electric lines, those wires often carry between 15,000 and 25,000 volts of electricity. That is hundreds of times more powerful than the electricity in a typical home.

You do not even have to touch the wire. If you get too close, electricity can jump through the air in what is known as an electrical arc. This can cause devastating burns, cardiac arrest, or death within a fraction of a second.

Not All Trains Have Overhead Wires

Some trains, particularly diesel trains, do not use overhead power lines. At first glance, that might make climbing onto them seem safer.

It isn't.

Even without overhead electricity, standing on the roof of any train remains extremely dangerous.

Bridges, Tunnels, and Other Obstacles

Railways are designed with very little space above passing trains. Bridges, tunnels, overhead signs, and other structures may leave only a small gap between the train and the object above.

Someone standing on the roof can easily be struck by one of these obstacles. At railway speeds, even a relatively low bridge can be instantly fatal.

The Wind Is Stronger Than You Think

The faster a train travels, the stronger the wind becomes.

At speeds of 60 mph (100 km/h), the force of the wind alone can make it difficult to stay balanced. On high-speed trains traveling over 180 mph (300 km/h), remaining on the roof would be virtually impossible for most people.

Even a small loss of balance can send someone falling from the train.

Low Speed Does Not Mean Low Risk

Some people assume that climbing onto a slow-moving freight train is much less dangerous.

While the wind is weaker, the risks remain enormous. Freight routes can also be electrified, and freight trains pass beneath bridges, through tunnels, and alongside other trains. A fall from even a slow-moving train can result in severe injuries or death.

Every Railway System Is Different

Around the world, railways use different technologies. Some countries rely heavily on overhead electrical wires, while others use diesel locomotives or third-rail systems, where electricity is supplied through a rail on the ground instead.

Because every railway system is different, it is impossible to judge the danger simply by looking at a train. A train that appears harmless may still be operating on an electrified route or enter one moments later.

The Bottom Line

Climbing onto the roof of any train is extremely dangerous. On electrified railways, the overhead power lines alone can be deadly without being touched. On non-electrified routes, bridges, tunnels, strong winds, falls, and unexpected railway infrastructure still create life-threatening hazards.

Whether the train is old or new, fast or slow, passenger or freight, the safest place is always inside the train—or better yet, well away from the tracks unless you are an authorized railway worker.
