The Machrie Moor Standing Stones, isle of Arran

in #travel10 days ago

The Machrie Moor Standing Stones are a group of ancient stone circles and pillars on the Isle of Arran. They feature tall red sandstone and granite pillars dating back 3,500 to 1,500 years BC. Machrie Moor is probably the best known area for stone circles on Arran. Whilst the main standing stones themselves are around 2000 yrs BC, they are actually on the sites of previous wooden structures thought to date back to 4500 BC, and some are almost 5m high! There are six circles in total and unlike other monuments you can walk up and touch the stones. #machriestones #machrie #arran #isleofarran #scotland
