THAELIR OF THE HOLLOW TIDE EPISODE 01 — THE DAY THE SEA OPENED ABOVE THEM

in #visualfiction29 days ago

For four centuries, the ocean watched from the sky.

Then, at dawn, it opened.

The village of Nareth clung to the underside of a limestone cliff overlooking the Hollow Expanse. Above the world hung the Great Sea, a vast suspended ocean stretching beyond the horizon like a second heaven.

Every morning, the fishermen launched their sailcraft across the mist-covered shallows below while the hanging waters drifted silently overhead.

That morning began like every other.

The air smelled of salt.

The tide bells echoed through the village.

The moon-whales were distant shadows beyond the clouds.

Then the sky trembled.

At first, nobody understood what they were seeing.

A narrow line appeared across the suspended ocean.

A fracture.

A wound.

The impossible seam widened slowly through the enormous sea above.

The villagers gathered in silence.

Children stopped playing.

The priests abandoned their morning chants.

Even the seabirds vanished.

The hanging ocean was opening.

Millions of tons of water folded apart like immense curtains drawn by unseen hands.

Behind them stood something that had not been seen for centuries.

A staircase.

A colossal staircase descending from within the sea itself.

Its steps were carved from pale stone glowing beneath layers of ancient water.

They stretched downward through clouds and mist, vanishing into the world below.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

The Great Sea had hidden many mysteries.

But never before had it revealed a path.

At the edge of the harbor stood a young fisherman named Thaelir.

While others stared in fear, he noticed something else.

Far above the staircase, beyond the opening waters, silhouettes were moving.

Watching.

Waiting.

As if they had been expecting the sea to open all along.

And for the first time in generations, the ocean was no longer silent.

A distant sound rolled across the sky.

Not thunder.

Not wind.

A voice.

Ancient.

Unfathomable.

Calling from somewhere beyond the waters above.

For centuries, humanity lived beneath the sea.

Not beside it.

Not beyond it.

Beneath it.

And on the morning the ocean opened, the world learned that the heavens had been hiding something far older than memory.

Sort:

The imagery in this chapter is incredible. The idea of the sea opening above them immediately grabbed my attention and made me want to keep reading. Looking forward to seeing where Thaelir's journey leads.
