The Ethics of Autonomous Weapons Systems: A Digital Pandora’s Box?

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence has moved from our pockets—in the form of smartphones—to the front lines of global defense. Autonomous Weapons Systems (AWS), often dubbed "slaughterbots," represent one of the most contentious technological frontiers of our time.

As machines gain the capacity to select and engage targets without human intervention, we are forced to confront a profound ethical dilemma: Can a line of code ever be held accountable for the taking of a human life?

The primary argument in favor of AWS is often rooted in precision. Proponents suggest that autonomous systems, unburdened by human emotions like fear, rage, or fatigue, could potentially reduce collateral damage and execute missions with surgical accuracy.
