Wise words of the Bible: A warning given by an experienced person to someone willing to listen is more valuable than gold rings or jewelry made of the finest gold. Proverbs 25:12
The Book of Proverbs, a sapiential book of the Bible, with its words full of wisdom, invites reflection and learning about what is best and most excellent for humankind. For there is one thing that cannot be hidden: people need the knowledge and the science to live. It is a very serious mistake to think that having "values" or "virtues" is enough in life to achieve success, well-being, and happiness. This is because reality is a little more complex than it seems, because people have concealment strategies, and often personal decisions must be made under conditions of limited information; lies, misinformation, and deception are present, and these problems must be overcome.
Wisdom as a science takes these factors into account, and that is why the words and teachings of the wise are so valuable for the common and simple people. In a world dominated by selfishness, error, and violence, wisdom becomes the asset that brings the greatest spiritual benefits in the long run. Those who live wisely then have a great advantage over those who follow their fleeting passions and whims. And this is so because wisdom has a fundamental characteristic: wisdom orders, it orders the minds of men, and it orders the whole of society.
And this order translates into practical issues. And that is why wise people are sometimes repetitive about something: the importance of knowing how to listen. And so, the Book of Proverbs teaches the following spiritual phrase: "A warning given by an experienced person to someone willing to listen is more valuable than gold rings or jewelry made of the finest gold" Proverbs 25:12.
This phrase is a reminder not only of the beauty of wisdom, but also that its practical purpose is life itself; that is why it's so important to listen. Those who know how to listen to advice truly love life in its purest sense. Wisdom, then, is an order that invites listening and living with excellence. Wisdom taught by experienced people, then, reveals itself as the true good worth striving for, more than all the gold in the world or the most beautiful jewels. And this is the lesson of the proverb. Common sense and good judgment are based on understanding this.
