I barely even understand what @tippy does or even how to tip with @steem for that matter, but as someone who does some app development am impressed and appreciate the further insight gleened from this post. Thanks.
Right now in order to tip someone you'd have to open a new window or leave the post, navigate to your wallet, click the currency, click transfer, type in their name, type in the amount, type a memo if wanted then click the transfer button..
With @tippy all you have to do is tip @tippy whatever balance you'd like on hand to tip faster and type anywhere in a comment or post "@tippy tip user 0.001 steem" and that's it.
Saves time, allows you to send funds without having to navigate or leave the post. Makes life easier. :)

It runs on the STEEM network itself. Independent of Steemit but usable on it.
Okay. I'm still vague on how they all interrelate. Steemit is an interface for STEEM network, right?
STEEM is a blockchain explorer of sorts.
