Jesus' final words: He rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. Mark 16:14
The Gospel of Mark recounts Jesus' final words and his farewell to the disciples before his ascension to heaven. Although Jesus had fulfilled his mission in the world through his death and crucifixion, the disciples remained astonished and unable to believe what had happened to their master. They were still confused and did not fully understand the mission the Holy Spirit had prepared for them. The disciples had not received the holy spirit, and the understanding of the truth that Jesus wanted to transmit to them slipped through their fingers like water, and this was logical because the disciples were still incomplete men, that is, prudent and rational men. The understanding of the truth, along with the gifts of wisdom and understanding, would only arrive at the celebration of Pentecost in tongues of fire.
And so the Gospel of Mark recounts what happened before the ascension of Jesus: "Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen" Mark 16:14. With this rebuke, which was logical given the situation, Jesus wanted to confirm the disciples in their faith.
And after this, Jesus informed the disciples of the great spiritual mission that lay ahead of them, the proclamation of the Kingdom of God, the dominion or government of the divine perfections to all pagans and non-believers. A new Israel, not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit, was to be born, in order to fulfill all the prophecies announced in the Old Testament about the arrival of a new time. And so the divine master spoke to them with determination: "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned" Mark 16:15-16. After these words, the gospel concludes by saying that Jesus left the disciples and was taken to the right hand of the Father, and that finally, the time of the holy spirit with his spiritual gifts among believers began.
