The last time I thought I wanted to dabble with painting and all, I was like a kid in candy store being in the art store. I want to buy everything even though I don't know how to use them. LOL
What's the story behind the dragon?
I am afraid many creative people are collectors and if possible keep buying. 🤣
I could do the same, but I do not have the space nor the money and do not need it, although I would like to try out more and compare brands but therefore even those sets are way too expensive plus I want to use what I have and finish it first.
For example I saw a box with Rembrandt softpastels 120 colours (mine has 48) for 39 euros. It is cheap, but I didn't finish my 25 year old wooden box yet. So there's no need to buy more except for white plus I bought kraplak red.
Strangely enough it always feels I lack certain green and grey and I wish to have skin tones and dark purple but I never see them being sold separately.
If it comes to the dragon it is the symbol of the city born out of the swamp. The dragon protects the people and is also in the family name (translated: Dragon stone) of the Duke.

What about different brand? You can't be buying the whole new box just for those few colors.

There are brands not selling just the sticks so indeed you have buy the entire set
It would be a waste in my opinion because i don't think many can use the colors evenly like what happened to my watercolors and pencil colors during my school days
I agree. It annoying. We all use certain colours more than others. Thusfar for example only the Chinese oilpastel sets provide with 2-4 white sticks simply because white is used more.
Only a few brands sell oilpastels, softpastels or some colour pencils separate. The biggest joke is, of course, a few of them are expensive than buying a set. But why buy what you do not need? It is most likely the reason why you see artists with such a high amount of materials. They all come in sets.
The same counts for brushes. In the end we only have two or three favourite ones but you need to try out first and pay a fortune for owning something you do not need.
I like to try out the cheaper ones, will mix it or simply go painting with colours I do not like to get rid of them. 😁
So no, I am not in a certain colour period, but in the "use what you have first period".
That's the mindset to adopt now, using whatever you have.
When you said white is used more, it reminded me of a kindie schoolmate that always added a layer of white on everything in her coloring book.
You need white to mix colours, to make them lighter for example, darker can be done with other colours than black.
I assume the schoolmate discovered that the white is great to blend colours, let it look moor smooth and shiny and less bright.
I doubt it is a mindset from only to use what we have. That is how art started, by using what we have and develop certain methods. But working by following "the rules"and using the "right" materials doesn't create art. It does fill the pockets of the manufacturers and sellers.
As long as people believe art can only be created by buying the right materials and working in the right way, if it is framed, the price is set for a minimum of X euros this business will continue.
That kid had good eyes, not sure if she was being taught that or she figure it out herself. I remember it was quite pretty with the white shimmer.
You are right. Art and creation shouldn't be restricted by rules and limitation of material.
