Some landscapes reveal their beauty all at once.

Others invite us to look a little closer.

While exploring the coastline of São Miguel, my attention was drawn not only to the dramatic cliffs plunging into the Atlantic but also to a small observation platform standing quietly on the edge of the headland. Surrounded by green fields and overlooking an endless expanse of blue water, it seemed like the perfect place to pause and simply observe.

From a distance, the structure appears almost insignificant when compared to the scale of the surrounding landscape. Yet it becomes the element that gives the scene its story. It introduces a human presence without disturbing the natural harmony of the environment.

The rugged cliffs below tell a different story. Layers of volcanic rock, shaped by centuries of wind and waves, reveal the geological forces that created these islands in the middle of the Atlantic. The ocean continues its work today, sending waves against the base of the cliffs in a never-ending dialogue between land and sea.

What I enjoy most about scenes like this is the sense of perspective they provide. The viewing platform represents our desire to explore and understand the world around us, while the vast ocean reminds us how much remains beyond our horizon.

Photography allows us to freeze these moments of balance—where nature, scale, and human curiosity meet in a single frame.

Modern life often encourages us to keep moving, always focused on the next destination.

Yet some places remind us of the value of stopping.

This small lookout above the cliffs seems to exist for that very purpose: not to arrive somewhere, but simply to appreciate what is already there.

Perhaps the most memorable journeys are not measured by distance, but by the moments that make us pause and admire the view.
