As this study accomplished through Columbia University, base editing allows us to have a much more precise way of editing genomic DNA than with earlier CRISPR technologies by reducing the chances of accidental DNA damage. This inherent improvement offers great promise in terms of preventing hereditary diseases. However, it does present several ethical and safety concerns that currently prohibit its use for clinical applications including the potential for mosaicism and potential harm to embryos at high doses. Therefore, appropriate oversight will be critical.
