SLS33-From My kitchen To Your Plate Week#2 My City My Taste[EGUSI SOUP]

Egusi soup is one of the most popular traditional dishes in Nigeria and a favorite meal in many homes including mine, It is prepared from grounded melon seeds (egusi), palm oil, vegetables such as ugu or bitter leaf, assorted meat, fish, crayfish and some local seasonings, The soup has a rich, delicious taste and is commonly served with pounded yam, eba, fufu, semovita, or even amala, It's unique flavor and satisfying texture make it a special meal for both everyday dining and festive occasions in my country Nigeria.

Apart from its delicious taste, Egusi soup is highly nutritious because it contains protein, healthy fats, vitamins and also essential minerals from its ingredients, It is often prepared during weddings, festivals, family gatherings and other celebrations we love, for me it brings people together to share a memorable meal, Egusi soup represents the richness of Nigerian culture, hospitality and tradition, making it one of the country's most treasured local dishes(Nigeria)

MY PREPARATION PROCESS

Step 1👇

I made sure that I dried the melon (Egusi) on the sun so that it will be a little dryed to avoid it from delaying me when grounding it, after a while i then used our grounding machine to ground it into thick powder form so that everything would move smoothly when cooking it.

Step 2 👇

I started washing my vegetable (Ugu), after washing it very clean and removing all sands and dirt that is harmful in the body, then i used the kitchen knife to cut them in to smaller sizes, before starting the preparation of the soup I made sure that I prepared everything.

2. Popular City Taste?

Every city has special dishes that reflect its culture, traditions and local ingredients, In my city(Nigeria, Igbo culture), these foods are well known and are commonly prepared during family meals, celebrations and community gatherings. Dear wonderful steemians here are four popular foods that represent the taste of my city:

IMG_20260721_171753_350.jpg

  1. Egusi Soup – A rich melon seed soup prepared with meat, fish, vegetables, and palm oil. It is usually served with pounded yam, eba, or fufu.

  2. Afang Soup – A nutritious vegetable soup made with afang leaves, waterleaf, assorted meat, fish, crayfish, and palm oil. It is a favorite dish for special occasions.

  3. Edikang Ikong Soup – A healthy soup made with pumpkin leaves (ugu), waterleaf, assorted meat, fish and palm oil. It is well known for its rich taste and nutritional value.

  4. Achi Soup – A delicious traditional soup thickened with achi seeds and cooked with meat, fish, vegetables, and local spices. It is commonly enjoyed with pounded yam or fufu.

These traditional dishes are more than just food but represent our heritage, bring families together and proudly showcase the unique taste and culture of our city🤗.

3. Show Cultural importance

Traditional foods is an important part of the identity and culture of my city(Nigeria Igbo culture) They represent our history, customs and the values that have been passed down from one generation to another, meals such as Egusi Soup, Afang Soup, Edikang Ikong and Achi Soup are more than everyday dishes because they are symbols of our heritage and the pride of our community(Nigeria).

These food is normally prepared during occasion time, because it's very important to my family and the whole community as a whole, it's nice taste and good fregrance always brings people around together 🤗.

The ingredients used in these dishes are mostly sourced from local farms and markets, which supports local farmers and traders while promoting the use of fresh, natural produce. Traditional foods also encourage unity because families often cook and eat together, creating lasting memories and strengthening relationships.

  • According to my observations the special foods of my city(Nigeria) are not only delicious but also an important part of our culture, They connect us to our roots, preserve our traditions and always remind us of the values of unity, generosity and community(Nigeria)

You presented the Egusi soup so well, and I enjoyed reading through each step of your preparation. Though it's a bit differ from how I used to prepare mine. But your final dish looks inviting. I also liked how you explained the cultural importance of the meal especially a personal story about how it brought comfort to your family during difficult times.

But let me jokingly disagree with you on one thing. 😄 While Egusi is loved by most Nigerians and rooted from Igbo tribe, Edikang Ikong and Afang soup proudly originated from the Ibibio and Efik tribes of Akwa Ibom and Cross River. 😁 Just that we happily shared those delicious recipes with the rest of the country because good food is meant to unite us all.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful entry, and I wish you the very best in the contest!

Thanks ma 🙏

Thank you @suboohi

You have presented the Nigerian culture, tradition and food hospitality of the Igbo community in such a beautiful and vivid language that I was truly impressed. Your sincerity is evident in every step of making the Egasi soup, from the selection of ingredients to the beautiful presentation.

The most touching was the memory of the whole family eating Egasi soup together on a difficult day and forgetting their sorrows. Even in difficult times, the bond of love binds everyone together. I think I have seen videos of such food on YouTube. However, the ingredients for serving it seem unique. Best wishes to you.

Thanks ma 🙏, for reading my post and for your reply, I really appreciate it 🥰
