SCS32-W5 | Real-Life Problem Solving Challenge: Study Techniques
Studying and reading are the two common ways that we gain knowledge and learn by ourselves. This reminds me of my days in school when I took my studies very seriously, spending sleepless nights and burning candles to ensure that I had a good grade and learned from studying books. Without further ado, I have shared my study technique in this post regarding the challenge organised by @ahsansharif
What study technique do you often use, and how effective is it?
Pomodoro Technique is a study technique that I use often. This technique is what I use often to balance my study with work, and the method involves me studying for 25 minutes with full concentration and then taking a break for 5 minutes. I often take a longer break of about 15 to 20 minutes after four sessions.
Also, I combine this technique with:
Note-Taking Method: I have a small notebook where I do write down important points while reading. This is a method of writing down key points that helps me to remember information faster and better, and it makes revision easier for me.
To-do list: Like when I was a student, every morning that I wake up, I will write down the topic and tasks I want to complete for the day, and glance through what I read before I went to bed. This keeps me well organised and prevents me from forgetting important activities.
- Revision Before Sleeping: I often do spend like 15 to 20 minutes reviewing what I studied during the day. This helps me to improve memory retention.
What is the biggest distraction that affects your studies, and how do you control it?
My biggest distractions are noise from the neighborhood, social media, and excessive phone usage. Sometimes I do get distracted by notifications and social media platforms, which all of these do interrupt my concentration.
How I Control It:
- I do play music if it's calculation I am studying
- I do pause when the noise is too much
- I switch my phone to silent mode while I am studying
- I do keep my phone away from my study table
- I reward myself with a short social media break after completing my study goals.
What is one good habit that helps you improve your academic performance?
One good habit that has helped me improve my academic performance is consistency. Instead of waiting until examinations are close or the timetable is out, I study a little every day. Even if I only study my book for one hour, I make sure that I learn something new.
The benefits:
- It improves my understanding of the subjects
- It reduces examination pressure
- It increases my confidence
- It improved my academic performance
Consistency is the key to winning, and it has taught me discipline and really helped me become a more effective learner.
Explain any digital tools, apps, or resources that you commonly use for study.
Google Calendar 📆 is the digital tool that I use. This tool helps me in the following ways:
- It helps me to organise my study timetable
- Help me to set reminders for assignments and tests
- Helps me to manage deadlines
- Help me to improve time management

Also, besides using Google Calendar, I also make use of these tools below 👇
- Google: for research and quick notes
- ChatGPT: for explanations and academic research.
- Microsoft Word: for assignments and reports.
What advice would you give to students who struggle with anxiety and depression during their studies?
Students who struggle with anxiety and depression during their studies should remember that academic success is very important, but their well-being is equally important.
My Advice:
Create a Realistic Study Plan: Avoid overwhelming yourself with too many tasks at once. It is best that you break down large tasks in a way you can manage them.
Take Regular Breaks: Continuous studying for long hours can increase your stress. You should take short breaks to refresh your mind.
Talk to Someone: Share your concerns with someone trusted. The support you get from others can make a big difference to you.
Get enough sleep: If you rest well, you will be able to perform well, and resting should be part of you.
Avoid comparison: don't compare yourself with others because everyone learns at a different place so focus on yourself and celebrate every achievement of yours.

I think this combination of taking notes with the Pomodoro technique and revising before bed is quite effective. A 5-minute break after 25 minutes of reading prevents the mind from tiring, and a glance at night after a full day of reading helps prolong memory. Keeping your phone away from your study table or on silent is the best way to maintain focus these days, because once the notification tone distracts you, it takes a long time to get back to where you were. I agree with you. Maintaining consistency in studying, or spending at least an hour with a book every day, significantly reduces extra stress before exams. However, the advice you gave about mental health is really important. I learned a lot of information through your post, and I wish you all the best in this contest. 🙂

I can attest that reviewing what you study at the end of the day helps with memory retention.
It might feel tiring at first but it's worth the sweat.
One other thing I do is quizzing myself after the review. For some people, reading might feel boring. Sometimes, you'd feel as if your brain still hasn't captured everything.
To boost my confidence, I try quizzes. It keeps my brain engaged and makes me identify areas I didn't understand fully.

I always like to take revision because it help a lot when the exam is approach. Noise and sound of music is the biggest problem some students normally face. Students who have television in the hostel and sound speaker will automatically failed because that will not help their academic activities.

¡Holaaa amigo!🤗
Me encantó esa técnica Pomodoro.

Salam! I really glad see your post. The Pomodoro technique is a very useful method and I think it help students stay focus without getting too tired. I also like your habit of revising before sleep. Because it really helps improve memory. Your advice about avoiding comparison with others is very important. Everyone learns their own pace. I wish you very good luck for this challenge.
